A light phenomenon called the northern lights (also known as the aurora borealis) are caused by the sun. They are actually caused by solar particles colliding with the atmospheric gases of the earth's atmosphere.
A reasonable level of activity is required for the lights to be seen by the naked eye. On an active day they look stunning especially with the moon present. Some of the best places to see the northern lights are in the arctic of Alaska and along the Dempster Highway in the Yukon Territory of Canada.
